Day 12 - Split, Croatia

Originally settled by a Greek emperor in the 3rd century as his retirement home Split has had all sorts of folks settle this sleepy little town. The longest group were the Venetians who wanted it for it's shipping harbor. This moderate temperature port has all the feelings of the something on the Med but without the over-development.
Different areas are setup for locals to sale their products to other locals
Giant peppers $3/lb
Pomegranate's $4\lb. Giant organic grapes $6/lb

Split has been left alone by wars as such it's the most perfectly preserved town in the region
If this fortress looks like something from Game of Thrones it's because the series was filmed here
Greek palace, 5th century
So much of the town is in perfect condition for being so old
It is semi-tropical
Old parts of the basement of the castle...
... are now small shopping spaces for locals to sell their goods

Split has totally embraced tourists. A Russian-derivative is the main language. You can tell the Yugoslavian roots of the people in the music.

As I'm not a big Game of Thrones fan I opted to explore the natural sights of the area

Ocean water for early Oct is mid 70s
Yeah I could swim here
Are you picking up that Med feel?
What a 45 min walk gets you
Like many Eastern European countries the government spent money on public works projects with no idea how to use it (here, never occupied hotel and high rise)
It is a beautiful port

Not a whole lot here to do. Next!

Tomorrow: Kotor, Montenegro
