I've never been woken to thunder so loud you'd think an entire Navy fleet was firing canons outside my window. 4am, opened the blinds, opened the sliding door, smelled what I can only liken to gunpowder. Then, out of no where, a flash so bright it became daylight for a few seconds. I counted 5-seconds for the thundering BOOM to pound my chest. Kotor had a massive storm sitting atop it and we're headed there.
Welcome to the Adriatic town of Kotor, Montenegro. This 100BC town founded by the Greek and have been ruled by the Serbians, Hugarians and Ventians. It was the Venetians that created the giant 50-foot thick walls that still protect the town. This is a very tiny port, beautiful, but added by cruise ships to avoid you having to pay 22% EU VAT tax on all onboard purchases as Kotor isn't part of the EU which exempts the whole sailing of the tax.
Greek art
They do a different version of pastries than the rest of Europe
You can see in the buildings the various architectural influences
Lots of religions here too. This church dates back to 1166
Beautiful coblestone roads and buildings fill the streets within the fortress walls
Pristine water from the hills
Orthodox Christian chapels far outnumber Catholic churches
Regardless your current religion everyone is free to practice any religion they want and all the religions co-exist peacefully
The melting of different cultures in this town is stunning
Kotor is considered the fjords of southern Europe
You'd think this was glacier cold water. In reality it was in the high 70s
Some of the fortress walls, rising 400' from the ocean
Is that an island? In the middle of a giant bay??
Our Lady of the Rocks. A man-made island, sailors would throw rocks into the bay upon safe return from travels. Eventually it was large enough to build a churc
